Following article is for information purposes only!

Okay, so you are stuck!

You really wanna use this application but lack of administrator privileges doesn’t let you install and use your favorite program… Too bad isn’t it?

Well, following are some ways using which you can now use your favorite applications (without installing!) without Administrator privileges.

WAY ZERO – Just install ‘em

Well, trying always helps! Just download the executable setup and try to install it in a folder you have access/rights/permissions to. For example try to install them in My Documents, or My Pictures folder rather that C:\Program Files. Some program place dll’s in System 32 folder and they will give you an error indicating cannot write to ___ folder, try ignore button if available, sometimes this trick really works.

WAY ONE – Portable Applications

Yes, the first thing you should do (That’s why I titled it as Way One ), search for a portable version of the application. Just go to Google and add the word ‘portable’ in your query. You’ll get many sites that provide portable applications for you to download and use.

Example: Suppose you want to install “Application XYZ” just open Google and search for “Application XYZ portable” or “Portable Application XYZ”.

It’s simple and the best way to get your favorite applications running on your machine. You can try following sites:

UPDATE: Try http://www.spoon.net , This website offers applications which can run from the internet directly without the need of any installation or Admin rights. Also read my latest blog entry ‘How to make your own web hosted applications’ Free!

WAY TWO – Universal Extractor

Universal Extractor is a program that does exactly what it says: extract files from any type of archive. And of course, it’s free to use… The best part is you do not need to install it. Just download the archive from UniExtract Binary Archive (4.84 MB) which contains the binaries. Visit http://legroom.net/software/uniextract for downloading in other languages and find information regarding how to use it.

Using Universal Extractor you can extract all the files from the setup archive and then you can run the main program EXE. Please note that this does not work for all programs but still you can try if it works with your favorite applications.

WAY THREE – Other ways

Well if none of the above worked for you, maybe you could search for an alternative application that does the same thing what you want, or you can make your own portable applications by using vmware ThinApp or other techniques available. Just do some Googling and you will find different methods.

Just leave a comment or any information you wanna share etc… I’d be happy to expand on this further.

Adding .cer certificates on your Android Phone

Wow, what a title! Well actually that's not possible. The only reason I used this title is - in this tutorial we will be using .cer certificate and will be converting it to .pfx certificate which will then be used on our phone. (Experience free call to US and Canada visit How to use Gmail Call features outside US ) I have gone through a lot of pages saying that certificates problem with Android OS, how to use WPA2 Enterprise secured network on Android, how to add .cer files to android and many more. I have found solutions to some problems somewhere on the internet, but didn't found all the related information at a single place. So I thought of writing this blog entry dedicated to adding certificates for WPA2 Enterprise secured network. Please note that I have a HTC Hero (GSM) which is having Android OS 1.5 (Yes I resisted myself from rooting it with 2.1, but the official update is coming soon). I will update this entry when I’ll get my hands on Android 2.1 UPDATE: For in...
